What is structured water?

Structured water (also called microstructured water) is water whose H₂O molecules arrange themselves into regular, smaller clusters. In nature, such water can be found in glaciers or deep mountain springs — places where water filters through rocks under high pressure over a long time.

To understand why this matters, we need to start from the basics: what is a water cluster and why does cluster size determine how well water hydrates your cells.

Water clusters — what they are and why they matter

Water does not consist of individual, independent H₂O molecules. In reality, water molecules bond to each other through hydrogen bonds, forming groups called clusters. These clusters determine many of water’s physical properties.

The problem with regular water — tap or bottled — is that the clusters are too large. Regular water forms clusters of 15 to 26 molecules. Cell membranes have pores of a specific size — and these large clusters simply cannot pass through them.

Kangen Water, through the electrolytic process, breaks these large clusters down into smaller micro-clusters of just 5 to 8 molecules. These smaller groups pass freely through cell membranes, hydrating cells directly and effectively.

How does electrolysis change the structure of water?

Electrolysis is a physical process — not a chemical one. No substances are added to the water. It is an electric current flowing through water via specially designed titanium-platinum plates that reorganizes the water molecules.

Structured water — what is it in simple terms?
Structured water is water whose H₂O molecules form smaller, more regular clusters than in regular water. Can Kangen Water micro-clusters be scientifically measured?
Yes. Water cluster size can be measured by NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy). Studies using this technique have shown that Kangen Water forms clusters of significantly smaller size than regular tap or bottled water. This is a physical measurement — not a marketing claim.
How long does Kangen Water retain its micro-cluster structure?
The micro-cluster structure gradually dissipates after drawing water — clusters slowly return to their normal size. Best practice is to drink Kangen Water freshly drawn or stored in a tightly sealed glass or stainless steel bottle, within 24–48 hours of filling. Stored in the refrigerator, it retains its properties longer.
How does structured water differ from mineral water?
Mineral water is valued for its mineral content. Kangen structured water contains minerals (they are not removed during electrolytic filtration), but additionally has smaller molecular clusters and negative ORP (antioxidant properties). Bottled mineral water typically has positive ORP and standard cluster structure. Kangen combines minerals with the properties of structured water.
